[football] India Retains Nehru Cup After a Dramatic Final

India retained the ONGC Nehru Cup defeating Syria 5-4 in the penalties after a goalless 90 minutes and score getting tied 1-1 after the extra time by a scintillating performance of goalkeeper Subrata Pal. India matched ball by ball with the Syrians and sometimes looked more dangerous in attack. Even though Bhaichung Bhutia combined well with Sunil Chhetri in the attack, India could not find the goal in the full time.
In the extra time Indian coach replaced Anthony Pereira with Renedy Singh and that paid off when Renedy fired a freekick to the Syrian goal at the 115th minute. India looked set  to win the match with just 5 minutes left and Indian's rebounding the sudden Syrian charge on India's goal. India even looked close to scoring the second when Surkumar, Steven Dias and Bhaichung went forward on a counter attack. However Surkumar's final shot was saved by the Syrian goalkeeper. When every Indian fan started to celebrate the win, then came the shocker when Ali Diab headed past Subrata Pal off a cross from the right flank on the last shot of the game.
In the tiebreaker Subrata Pal saved two of the Syrian shots in the first five. But Renedy Singh's unlucky shot rebounded off the left post when the goalkeeper jumped to the right and Mehraj's shot was saved by the Syrian goalkeeper. The next shots were scored by both sides. At the seventh penalty after Surkumar scored, Subrata saved another to give India the win. Subrata was really the star of the shootout as he saved 3 of the 7 shots and jumped to the right direction in another three.
