Somdev Devvarman advance to the second round of the US Open defeating Portuguese Frederico Gill 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. This is the first time Somdev has qualified for the main draw of the US Open. The Indian took two hours and 26 minutes to win the match firing four aces on the way. Somdev will now face the winner of Phillip Kohlschreibber and Andreas Seppi in the second round.If he continues his run any more, Somdev may meet Radek Stepanek and then Novak Djokovic in the next rounds.
The other and more famous Indian challenge in the singles, Sania Mirza also won her first round match against Olga Govorstova of Belarus 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in her first round match. Sania will now meet tenth seed Flavia Pennetta who defeated Edina Gallovits 6-4, 6-0.
